The Importance of AI Regulation: A Conversation with Greg Jensen and Nir Bar Dea

I recently wrote a Daily Observations with Bridgewater CEO Nir Bar Dea on the importance of AI regulation. In the piece, we shared our framework for how policy makers might want to consider navigating huge technological transformations like we’re seeing with AI, why it’s so important for policy makers to get this right today, and some specific policy proposals we would recommend, particularly around two areas:

  1. AI safety: we make the case that government rather than industry should set standards for how models are developed, released, and used.
  2. Labor disruption: we suggest that a token tax and citizen equity in the leading AI companies would help make society more resilient to the AI transition and give citizens a stake in it.

You can read the full Observations on our website. That BDO prompted excellent conversations internally at Bridgewater and with many of our clients about AI policy. To discuss some of the follow-up questions we received and expand on the points laid out in the piece, I recently sat down for a conversation with Nir and Daily Observations editor Jim Haskel. I’ve included that discussion below.
