Karen Karniol-Tambour Named Co-Chief Investment Officer

The first email below was sent to Bridgewater’s clients on February 2nd, 2023, referencing the second email which was sent to employees earlier that day.

Below please find a note we sent earlier today to the company announcing that Karen Karniol-Tambour is now co-Chief Investment Officer of Bridgewater, joining Bob Prince and Greg Jensen as a full partner in leading our Investment Committee and holding ultimate responsibility for our investment strategy and outcomes. This marks another milestone in Karen’s incredible career — over the last 16 years she has become a trusted advisor to our clients, a role model for our best rising talent, and one of our most important leaders at the forefront of a new generation. We are excited to share this moment with you.

All our best,
Nir Bar Dea, Co-Chief Executive Officer

Team,

I’m excited to let you know that Karen Karniol-Tambour is now co-Chief Investment Officer of Bridgewater, joining Bob and myself as a full partner in leading our Investment Committee and holding ultimate responsibility for our investment strategy and outcomes.

On Tuesday, the Investment Committee unanimously nominated her to this role and the CEOs accepted their recommendation, which marks the latest milestone in a 16-year journey that is remarkable in the history of Bridgewater.

It started in 2006, when Karen joined as an Investment Associate on the fixed income team. Just seven years later, she became Head of Investment Research. In this role, she collaborated closely with Ray, Bob and myself and led some of Bridgewater’s most important work of that era, developing many new areas of systemized investment understanding and evolving our portfolio construction. She also became a trusted advisor to our clients, partnering with them to translate our understanding into their portfolios. In 2021, she became Co-CIO for Sustainability, launching with Carsten Stendevad our first portfolios that incorporate sustainability considerations alongside risk and return. She has held key leadership roles on our Investment and Commercial Committees and has played a significant role mentoring the next generation of investors and enriching our community.

I’ve known Karen since I recruited her to Bridgewater as a college senior, and for all that time, I’ve admired how she lives our values — in particular her courage, her deep care for others, and her creativity and tenacity in the face of our most important challenges and opportunities. We are lucky to have her leading at the highest level of Bridgewater, and I’m thrilled to have her partnering even more closely with our leadership team going forward.

Please join me in congratulating her,
Greg
