Carol Bernheim Selected for Lifetime Achievement Award by Law.com

Carol started her law career the Corporation Counsel’s Office in 1979. In 1981, she joined Epstein Becker & Green as an Associate, where she spent over a decade and rose rapidly through the ranks to ultimately become Partner. She moved on to roles as Executive Director and Head of Morgan Stanley’s Institutional Securities Employment Law Group and Managing Director and Global Head of Employee Relations at Credit Suisse before joining Bridgewater Associates in 2011, where she has served as Deputy General Counsel for the last decade.

In her initial years at Bridgewater, Carol drove the design and execution of a new employment law training curriculum. Her integration of personal anecdotes and her trademark sense of humor made the sometimes difficult subject matter accessible and memorable, as evidenced by the hundreds of instances of positive feedback from her peers. She has since partnered with every business unit at the firm on a broad range of employment matters, including dispute resolution, employment agreements, and oversight of the entire employee lifecycle.

With decades of practice in employment law, Carol has developed industry-leading expertise in designing and executing strategic HR programs and establishing policies and procedures that reduce corporate risk, while also building enduring bonds with her colleagues not only in the legal department, but also across the full breadth of the business.

Throughout her career, Carol has experienced the inspiring, hard won, and sometimes harrowing evolution of the role of women and other underrepresented groups on Wall Street. Reminding people who they are in the toughest moments is one of her most important roles and it has been a common thread throughout her career. She is also a board member of the Partnership for Gender Specific Medicine, which aims to ensure equity in women’s treatment and care.

In recognition of these accomplishments throughout her career, Carol has been selected by Law.com to receive the Women, Influence, and Power in Law Lifetime Achievement Award. She and other award recipients will be recognized at the 2022 Women, Influence & Power in Law Awards on October 18, in Washington, D.C.
