Alphonso David: Overcoming Fear and Indifference

As part of our Pride Month celebration, the Bridgewater community welcomed Alphonso David, president of the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) — America’s largest organization supporting LGBTQ+ civil rights. In a virtual discussion with Bridgewater’s CEO, David spoke about the ongoing fight for equality, common pursuit of justice, and getting past fear and indifference by seeing the common humanity in one another. He recognized the progress that has been made in the US since the 1960s, while acknowledging the still-significant challenges facing the LGBTQ+ community in areas like employment, housing, and more. He shared with our community that fear or indifference towards LGBTQ+ people has been a key obstacle in the pursuit for equal rights: David explained, “Embedded in that disconnect is learned behavior,” which he believes can be dissolved by a focus on our shared humanity.
