Working at Bridgewater

Ian, Head of Trading Technology

Name: Ian
Role: Head of Trading Technology, Technology
Background: Ian Cadieu currently serves as Head of Trading Technology. Joining Bridgewater out of college in 2006, Ian began his career doing a combination of investment research and software development. Now he focuses on building out the automated trading systems that express our market strategies.

What is an interesting business problem you’re trying to solve?
I try to figure out how our technology platform can enable better outcomes by pushing the envelope of what’s possible in the marketplace. There’s a lot of complex, nuanced interplay between what’s technically feasible, how markets work, and how to analyze the results. I’m working on improving our trading outcomes and efficiency through a combination of data science, machine learning, automation, and operational efficiency.

What meaningful impact have you been able to make here?
Getting an entire team to see the capabilities of how technology can push our business along has been invaluable. Watching such a diverse group of people contributing to that across the board, and getting the team to say, “Hey, we did that together!” has been humbling.

What are some things that you've learned about yourself from working at Bridgewater?
Humility was not in my vocabulary when I arrived at Bridgewater. My 22-year-old self couldn’t tell you what I was bad at because I felt I was good at everything. Reality hit me when I got to Bridgewater. I began reading textbooks all night long, just to feel like I could hang with some of the smartest people I’d ever met. The humility required to truly understand how all the elements of a complex project fit together is so important. I’m grateful to work with a group of dedicated people, forged in a community that does a lot of complex work and cares deeply about one another.
